Urology

Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopy is the newest and most sophisticated technique of minimally invasive surgery by incorporating magnified endoscopic visualization of the abdominal cavity, along with puncture entry ports (trochars) for introducing surgical instruments. Laparoscopy has taken urologic surgery into an entirely new realm, allowing the most complicated and advanced surgical procedures to be performed without incising the abdominal wall.

The advantages of laparoscopy include reduced post-operative pain, a more rapid recovery, decreased hospital stay and quick return to work. We offer a wide range of laparoscopic operations. Examples of procedures which would be performed within this subdivision include stone sugery, partial and radical nephrectomy, retoperitoneal lymph node dissection for testis cancer, antireflux surgery, augmentation cystoplasty, donor nephrectomy, pyeloplasy, etc.
We have published original "first time ever" laparoscopic procedures in top notch journals of our field and actively present our new advances at international meetings of congresses.

Endourology

Our center has applied every aspect of the endoscopic revolution in urologic surgery to the treatment of urinary stones including rigid and flexible ureteroscopy, pneumatic lithotripsy, percutaneous removal of renal calculi, etc.
Endourology incorporates endoscopic camera-based visualization the body cavities to perform surgical interventions to correct disease in various parts of the genitourinary system. Percutaneous nephroscopy (PCN) enables us to treat the kidney for stones, strictures and small tumors through a small puncture in the flank. At the same, we are able to treat ureteral stones, strictures and some tumors without any incision by accessing the ureter through the urethra using rigid and flexible ureteroscopy. At HKC we routinely perform these procedures on children and adults and have also pioneered endourologic correction of post transplant complications in Iran.

General Urology

We offer consultation, diagnosis, and treatment for all urologic diseases in male and female patients of all ages not included in one of the other subdivisions of the department such as cancer, congenital and acquired diseases. Patients can be evaluated for conditions as common as urinary tract infections or bloody urine, to more complicated problems of bladder control, and complex conditions involving the kidney, ureter, bladder, prostate, seminal vesicles, urethra, adrenals, etc.

Stone Disease

We are proud to provide state-of-the-art care in all aspects of urolithiasis including diagnosis, management and prevention. By combining endourological and minimally invasive surgical procedures with technical innovation, patients can be treated in a single session without the need for an open surgical procedure in over 90% of stones.

Our center has recently been furnished with a new Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) unit (Dornier delta on relax plus bed, equipped with both fluoroscopy and sonography). This machine is designed to break stones into sand-like particles by means of medium energy shock waves. Recognized by leading urologists as the first-line treatment for most kidney stones, this procedure requires no surgery and is relatively painless. The great majority of kidney stones can be successfully treated with this method. When needed, minimally invasive surgery including percutaneous nephrolithotomy and ureteroscopic stone removal may be employed as sandwich multimodal therapy for relief from any type or size of stone at one session and on the same table.

Female Urology

We offer a wide range of medical and surgical treatment options for female urological disorders including urinary tract infections, stress and urge urinary incontinence and a range of other bladder and urogenital disorders. Depending on the underlying disease, treatment options offered include: Medical therapy, minimally invasive procedures and various surgical procedures such as transvaginal and transobturator tape placement for incontinence.

Pediatric Urology

One area of special interest within our department is the evaluation and treatment of voiding problems ranging from spinal cord abnormalities to acquired voiding problems. Our staff working in this area have special training and experience in various aspects of pediatric urologic care including treatment of the vesicoureteral reflux, reconstructive open and laparoscopic surgery. Our center was one of the first in our country to adopt the now widely acclaimed TIP surgery for hypospadias. We routinely perform laparoscopic pyeloplasty for ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) and reflux, in addition to high yield laparoscopy for the missing testis, etc.

Uro Oncology

Radical cancer surgery for renal tumors, upper tract TCC, prostate cancer, bladder replacement surgery, including the creation of continent orthotopic and catheterizable urinary pouches have been routinely performed at out center for the past 20 years. Some 29 continent reservoirs were created in the 9 months preceding the complication of this report.
